What Is a Limited-Slip Differential?

A limited-slip differential (LSD) is a performance drivetrain component that improves traction by distributing engine torque more effectively between the driven wheels.

Unlike a standard open differential, which can allow one wheel to spin freely when traction is lost, a Blackline helical gear LSD automatically transfers torque to the wheel with the most grip. This helps maintain forward drive and improves stability under acceleration.

Blackline helical LSDs use a gear-driven (helical) design rather than clutches. This means they operate smoothly and progressively, with no maintenance requirements or wear items under normal use. The result is improved traction and control without compromising everyday drivability.

This makes them ideal for fast road, track day, and motorsport applications where consistent power delivery and predictable handling are essential.

Benefits of Upgrading

Upgrading to a Blackline limited-slip differential transforms how your vehicle delivers power to the road, particularly under hard acceleration and demanding driving conditions.

In a standard open differential, power can be lost when one driven wheel begins to slip, reducing traction and limiting performance. A Blackline helical LSD helps overcome this by automatically transferring torque to the wheel with the most grip, improving forward drive and stability.

This results in more consistent traction, especially when exiting corners, accelerating out of low-grip situations, or driving in wet or uneven conditions. The difference is most noticeable in performance and modified vehicles where increased power can easily exceed the limits of an open differential.

Blackline helical LSDs are also designed for smooth, progressive operation with no clutch packs or serviceable wear components under normal use. This makes them ideal for fast road and track day applications where reliability, drivability and predictable performance are essential.

The result is a more controlled, confident driving experience with improved ability to put power down effectively when it matters most.

Installation Information

Installation of a limited-slip differential requires specialist knowledge and precise setup to ensure correct operation and long-term reliability.

We strongly recommend that all Blackline LSD installation kits are fitted by a qualified technician or performance workshop experienced in differential setup. Correct installation involves precise adjustment of bearing preload, backlash, and gear mesh, which are critical to the performance and durability of the differential.

Each kit is supplied with vehicle-specific components, including the Blackline LSD unit, Motul gear oil, and output shaft seals. Bearings and crown wheel & pinion components are not included unless explicitly stated in the product listing.

It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure all components are correctly fitted and the system is operating safely before vehicle use.

Gear Oil Information

• Product Type: GEAR 300

Disclaimer

It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure that all components are correctly fitted, adjusted, and secured in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and accepted workshop practices. Incorrect installation or setup may result in component failure, vehicle damage, or serious injury.

Blackline LSD installation kits must be fitted by a competent person or qualified technician experienced in drivetrain and differential setup. MLR accepts no liability for damage or issues arising from incorrect installation, setup, or misuse of the product.

Always ensure the vehicle is checked thoroughly for correct operation, fluid levels, and leaks before being returned to road or track use.
