When increasing power and torque on the Type R, additional heat can become a significant issue. During sustained hard driving, rising coolant and gearbox temperatures can trigger the ECU’s safety features, reducing torque or even putting the car into limp mode. To tackle this, AIRTEC developed a solution to improve the car’s entire cooling system and maintain performance under extreme conditions.
Developed in-house at AIRTEC HQ in the UK, the AIRTEC gearbox oil cooler kit is a unique upgrade that not only reduces transmission temperatures but also helps lower engine running temperatures. By adding an external oil cooler to the existing factory loop, both gearbox and engine oil temperatures are effectively reduced. The kit increases gearbox oil volume and improves cooling efficiency, helping maintain stable temperatures for longer periods of hard use.
The oil cooler mounts neatly to a replacement lower brace bar behind the radiator pack, which is stronger and more rigid than the original Honda component. An included air duct panel directs fresh air to the cooler, and the kit uses all original fixings for a direct replacement with no cutting or trimming required. Finished in a high-quality black powder coat, the kit comes with all necessary fittings, lines, and a detailed installation guide for an easy fit.
