Due to the restricted space within the upper grille area caused by the car’s intake system and ducting, it isn’t possible to install a full-size front-mount intercooler that spans the entire height of the grille. While AIRTEC offer a deeper intercooler upgrade for the ST, they wanted to explore additional ways to improve cooling efficiency and reduce charge temperatures without requiring any cutting or modification to the vehicle.

The answer was to create a secondary intercooler system that mounts discreetly beneath the car, behind the undertray, and is fed with fresh air via a dedicated duct. By integrating this secondary intercooler in place of a section of the existing pipework, they achieved a substantial increase in overall system capacity and improved cooling performance, while maintaining compatibility with both the factory and AIRTEC upgraded intercoolers.

Despite the significant improvement in cooling ability, the system fits neatly behind the undertray and can be fully reverted to standard without issue. The comprehensive fitting kit includes Pro Hoses silicone pipes, all required fixtures and fittings, and detailed step-by-step installation instructions for a simple and effective upgrade.

The testing
Measuring heat rejection levels and intake temperatures during back-to back testing on the road over eight consecutive runs showed that with the secondar

intercooler in place, heat rejection was improved by 41% whilst charge temps were reduced by half.

Data logging the intercooler outlet temperatures before and after fitting the secondary intercooler revealed a peak decrease measurement of 36.7-degress, which translated to a 76.4% reduction. Further testing revealed the secondary intercooler was able to repeat this kind of improvement, averaging a 72.5% decrease over four back-to-back runs proving the set up works effectively and efficiently.
