Product Questions

What is the difference between foam and pleated air filters?

Foam and pleated filters use different types of filter media, with each having its own characteristics.

Foam filters are washable and reusable and can hold a relatively large amount of dirt without significantly affecting airflow. This makes them particularly well suited to road cars and applications where longer service intervals are useful.

Pleated filters use a synthetic filter material designed to provide excellent airflow. As dirt and debris build up, however, airflow can gradually become restricted, so regular cleaning is important.

Neither type normally requires oiling for everyday road use.

How often should I clean my air filter?

How often a filter needs cleaning depends on the type of filter and how the vehicle is used.

As a general guide, pleated filters should be checked and cleaned every 3–6 months, while foam filters should be cleaned approximately every 10,000 miles or once a year.

Cars used in dusty conditions, on track or in other harsh environments may need more frequent cleaning.

What happens if I don't clean my air filter?

Over time, dirt and debris will build up in the filter media and can restrict airflow. This can reduce the filter's performance and, if it is left heavily contaminated for an extended period, may eventually affect the condition of the filter itself.

Regular cleaning helps maintain airflow and keeps the filter working as it should.

Are performance air filters waterproof?

Performance air filters are not designed to be submerged in water.

A correctly positioned filter should cope with normal road conditions and light exposure to water, but care should be taken where the filter is positioned close to a grille, bonnet vent or other area where it could be exposed to direct water ingress.

Do I need to oil my air filter?

For normal road use, oiling is generally not necessary.

A light application of suitable filter oil can be beneficial in particularly dusty, dry or harsh conditions, or where the vehicle is used regularly on track or the filter is exposed directly to the elements.

Always follow the maintenance instructions for the specific filter you are using.

Installation & Customisation

Do I need to remap my car after fitting a performance air filter?

In most cases, no remap is required when fitting a correctly specified replacement filter or intake system.

Performance filters are designed to work with the vehicle's existing engine management system. If you are making several other modifications to the intake or engine, however, a remap may be beneficial to make the most of the changes.

What universal air filter should I choose?

Universal filters aren't designed for a particular vehicle, so you'll need to check the available space and the dimensions of your existing intake.

Before choosing a filter, check:

  • The diameter of the intake pipe to determine the required filter neck size.
  • The maximum width available.
  • The maximum length available.
  • The position of any MAF or other sensors that need to remain connected.

Once you have these measurements, compare them with the dimensions listed on the individual filter product page.

If you're unsure which filter is suitable, get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

I need a replacement filter for my intake kit. Which one do I need?

The correct replacement filter will depend on the intake kit and filter originally fitted.

If you know the intake kit or filter part number, you can use this to identify the correct replacement. If you're unsure, contact us with the details of your intake kit or vehicle and we'll help you find the right filter.

What's the difference between the inner and outer diameter of a filter neck?

What's theThe measurement refers to how the filter connects to the intake pipe.

An inner diameter measurement means the filter is designed to fit over a pipe that enters inside the filter neck.

An outer diameter measurement means the filter is designed to connect to a hose or coupler that fits over the outside of the filter neck.

Always check the individual product dimensions before ordering, as the type of filter neck can vary between products. difference between the inner and outer diameter of a filter neck?
